This theology centered around the idea that the aorist communicates "point action." Eumaeus jumped up in amazement, and the bowls in which he had been busy mixing the sparkling wine tumbled out of his grasp. What hope had the Christians--poor, defenceless, outlaws? We are born again though belief in and obedience to the gospel. Shemaiah would not go out of his house, but he offered to go to the *temple with Nehemiah. It was he who had put the blame of the great fire of Rome on to the Christians; it was he who had initiated persecution; it was he who had found the most savage methods of torture.

The chapter itself gives us by far the best clue. It is entitled “The Biblical Story as a Drama in Five Acts.” Although Boring doesn’t mention it here, the idea of a five-act drama borrowed from an evangelistic tool used by one of the Disciples founders, Walter Scott. MacArthur focuses on the central theme of joy, he asserts that it is a gift from God to believers---given by the Holy Spirit, experienced through obedience, deepened by trials, and made complete through the hope of heaven.

In truth, it can hardly be imagined just HOW God could enter the world of human life in any other way than that depicted in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ. So the men who had no family records needed such a priest. The subject of verse 11 is the offense of the cross, which is a theme seen in much of Paul’s writings. A comparison of the table given by Luke will show that it differs in part from that of Matthew. And Tobiah replied many times to them. v18 The chief men sent letters to Tobiah because many of them had promised to be loyal to him.

To learn more about the kingdom of heaven, see “What are some distinctive features of Matthew?” in chapter 2 As the time for the Savior’s ministry drew near, John the Baptist began preaching to the people about the need for repentance. But their wall is as weak as a pile of stones. Sodom and Gomorrah stand as the types of sin, the symbols of those who had not received strangers (compare the story in Gen.19:4-11) and who had turned their benefactors into slaves (Wis.19:14-15). As people who are freed from the sinful nature into the Spirit, God’s children are to live according to the Spirit and not the sinful nature (Rom 8:5-8, 12). A translation based on the French edition of the Dominicans of the Ecole Biblique in Jerusalem, who translated it from the original languages.
